The best ideas often grow out of the simplest of beginnings.

This summer I started hosting 30 minute workouts in my back-alley as a way to ensure I would get at least one workout in over the weekend. The idea started to form through a busy spring when I wasn’t finding enough time to get to the gym.  The weather was beautiful so I just set up shop behind my garage for 20-30 minutes of metabolic conditioning, then ran to pick up the kids from school.

I don’t remember exactly when the idea took form, but it was early summer when I sent out a quick email to some neighbours and clients that I would be hosting a drop-in 30 minute class in my back-alley on Sunday mornings at 8:30am and would have a pot of coffee for us to share after class. It didn’t take long for the idea to gain traction. Before I knew it my lane way was filled with neighbour’s and their children for 30 minutes of sweat followed by 30-60 minutes of coffee fuelled conversation. The #BackAllyFitness class was formed!

As the weather has been turning colder, the kids are less inclined to join us to exercise so they pile inside my house and watch cartoons on the couch with my kids. At one point there were about 10 children quietly sitting in my living room while we squated and farmer walked and battle roped in the back-alley. As we hit December though, it seems as though we may finally need to say good-bye to this new Sunday morning ritual until the sun warms the air again in spring.

But that doesn’t mean the workouts need to come to a full stop. Instead I’d like to keep the workouts going,  get more people involved while maintaining the social element that has made Back-Alley Fitness so much fun.

And so, the Sunday Morning Family Challenge begins now. Each Saturday I’ll post a work-out on my Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts that you can do on your own, with your partner or with your kids to kick start your morning. Snap a photo of yourself and your crew at some point in your workout and post it to your preferred social media account with the hashtag #SundayMorningFamilyChallenge – don’t forget to tag me in it to make sure I see it! Every time you participate in the workout you’ll be entered into a monthly draw to win some fab prizes! December’s prize pack includes a KSA t-shirt, a mini-band exercise loop, and a Gratitude Journal to start some new traditions in 2017.

Make sure you follow me on Facebook at KSA Personal Training or @ms_kara_sa on Instagram/Twitter. Tag me, use #SundayMorningFamilyChallenge and get a strong start to your Sunday mornings!
